WHEN AND HOW TO APPLY

Visa Requirements

There are three different types of students visas issued by the United States for international students to stay in the US for the purpose of studying. They are F1 Visa, J1 Visa and M1 Visa. F-1 and M-1 student visas can be issued up to 120 days in advance of your course of study start date. However, students will not be allowed to enter the United States in F-1 or M-1 status earlier than 30 days before your start date.

F-1 VISA

This is the most common type of student visa. If you wish to take up an academic programme in the United States in an approved college or university, private secondary school, or in an approved English language programme, you will need an F-1 visa. You will also need an F-1 visa if your course of study is more than 18 hours a week

J-1 VISA

It is issued to students who need to obtain practical training that is not available in their home country to complete their academic programme. J-1 student status allows for similar employment as the F-1 visa, with similar restrictions as long as permission is given by the exchange visitor programme sponsor.

M-1 VISA

You will require an M-1 visa if you plan to engage in a non-academic or vocational course or training in an American institution. M-1 visa holders for technical and vocational programmes are not permitted to work during their studies. The M-1 student visa applicants must provide evidence that they have sufficient funds, which is immediately available to pay all tuition and living costs for the entire period of the intended stay.

To apply for the student visa, you must complete the following requirements:
  • Passport [ minimum 6 months validity ]
  • An offer of acceptance from a US university, along with I-20 which will be issued by US university after the completion of the admission formalities.
  • Form DS 160, which is an online visa application form, duly completed and signed.
  • Non - refundable US visa application fees of $160.
